History of Weusi 

                                                                       1965 - Present





History can be documented in several ways. It can be written or spoken,  photographed, or captured in a paintings or drawings. These approaches are ways of conveying the legacy of the WEUSI Artist Collective. The griots of the WEUSI Artist Collective have captured history using their unique creative styles to add a benchmark to the culture of Harlem and the world.


Otto Neals, along with four other artists, founded the WEUSI Artist Collective. He is credited with giving the group the name " WEUSI ", meaning " blackness ". He was studying the Swahili language and though it would be a great name for this newly formed collective of artist. 

Taiwo DuVall is also one of the original co-founders of the WEUSI Artist Collective. He was once asked " why was WEUSI formed ", to which he replied, " Because nothing like this exist". Taiwo is always humble, insightful, dedicated and respectful with a great sense of humor.

Abdullah Aziz - One of the original five at the annual Harlem Outdoor Art Festival in 1964 - 65. Abdullah was known as " The Ambassador" of the WEUSI Artist Collective.

G. Falcon Beazer - Another member of the " Fab Five ". He was a world traveler and founder of Karma; the Living Workshop In Karma.

Rudy Irwing (Baba Kachenga) at the WEUSI Art Festival in Saint Nickolas Park. He was a part of the group that developed Nyumba Ya Sanaa Gallery.
